John’s influence was huge in The Beatles, before he went on to launch his solo career and the Plastic Ono Band. As a songwriter and performer John co-wrote a staggering 25 Number One hits on the hot 100 U.S. charts. Rebellious by nature, he was a pacifist at heart and was also involved in political activism. Born on October 9, 1940, his life was tragically taken in 1980, but we are left with the most wonderful legacy and library of John’s song to reflect upon and enjoy.

Brian's career began with the iconic Australian band The Groop in 1966 and he wrote all of their many hit singles and albums including Woman You’re Breaking Me and Such A Lovely Way.
He formed Axiom with Glenn Shorrock, heavily influenced by The Band and dubbed Australia’s first supergroup - again he was the primary songwriter and penned hits including Little Ray of Sunshine, Arkansas Grass and My Baby’s Gone before the band broke up in 1969. He then joined Fable Records as head of A&R and chief producer. Fable launched a rock label called Bootleg Records in 1972, which Brian ran, as well as being its first artist. The label became the most successful independent record company in the history of Australian popular music up to that time. The next few years saw many gold and platinum records as a solo artist and an array of prestigious awards for film scores, title songs and TV themes. In addition he produced many acts, wrote much-loved hits including Ginger Man, Let Go, Don’t You Know It’s Magic and Alvin Purple, and recorded the platinum soundtrack to the worldwide-acclaimed cult surf movie Morning of the Earth.
Brian Cadd remains one of Australia’s greatest treasures; a true statesman of songwriting and recording. Not to be missed!
One of our favourite regular bands at TomKatz wanted us to pass on a few words...
"We wouldn’t have thought after our first gig at The Swan Hotel in Richmond on August 16th, 1997, that we’d still be firing over 25 years later. On that gig which went from 11pm to 2am we played 3 sets including some original songs which truly set the future ball rolling. We played The Swan for the next few Saturday nights until they decided to discount our already small pay, so we quit our first residency and went out looking for more work. After that incident we have never looked back. We estimate about 3000 gigs since we’ve been going, pubs, festivals, clubs, weddings, birthdays, a funeral, car shows, the lot.
We’ve been docked, drunk, starved, left without promised accommodation after a gig and played weddings where we received just one meal for all of us. Once we played a bar in Cowra where a massive fight started. We had to stop because the fighters were falling on our P.A. and gear. Later that night we were docked for finishing early. We’ve had stacks of good times which far outweigh the bad. So come down to the gig and enjoy our stuff because we sure like making it and playing it."

Playing the best of the British Invasion, The Substitutes recreate that 60s excitement and rawness that often gets lost with cover bands. Listen to a Dave Davies guitar solo or a Keith Moon drum fill and know that the 60s were about experimentation and shock, not just good pop melodies. With the incredible vocals and superb guitar work of Michael Barker, a rhythm section with Pete Robinson on bass (The Strangers) supported by Peter Reed on drums (ex New Dream) plus the punk energy of Adrian Scott on guitar and keys (Air Supply), The Substitutes faithfully produce the sounds of the 60s, just like the record, but with a real spirit, dry humour and a passion that you will remember ... they are simply the best 60s band in Melbourne, bar none!

In the beginning (way back in 1969) there was Spectrum, and in those days Spectrum was a Very Serious Band. When Spectrum’s alter-ego, The Indelible Murtceps, was created in 1970, suddenly fun and dancing became the order of the day. Murtceps (Spectrum backwards) even produced an album called Warts Up Your Nose from which the cheeky single Esmeralda was lifted - and The Indelible Murtceps became a legitimate contender for the crown. Despite this success Spectrum continued to use Murtceps as their support band, never giving them the kudos they felt they deserved.
Now, fifty years later, The Indelible Murtceps, featuring My Crudd (vocals, guitar), Agent Smith (bass) Chopped Liver (keys) and Robbo McRobbo (drums), are back with the star billing and, perhaps ironically, Mike Rudd’s Indelibles, which covers Rudd’s bands from Spectrum to the present day, is in the support role now.
Regulars at TomKatz, and playing the best of bands like the Beatles, Stones, Animals, Eagles and many more, the Cruizin' boys are guaranteed to get the crowd up and dancing.
If your tastes are inspired by the greatest couple of decades of music creativity and, just for a moment, you wish to relive your youth, come and check them out!

One of our favourite regular bands at TomKatz is celebrating 25 years! They wanted us to pass on a few words...
"We wouldn’t have thought after our first gig at The Swan Hotel in Richmond on August 16th, 1997, that we’d still be firing some 25 years later.
Touring isn’t easy and not for everyone, but we do it so we must love it.
We all know 25 years is a long time so come down to the gig and enjoy our stuff because we sure like making it and playing it."
An exciting group featuring some of Melbourne’s most experienced and talented musicians. With five members, it takes live music to that next level, and their impressive repertoire of disco, soul, funk and pop is sure to impress. They have over 50 years experience between them, playing weddings, parties, pubs and corporate events and now they're heading to TomKatz.
Jump Blues is an up-tempo style of blues dance music that became popular in the 1940s. A style of music that was the basis of Swing, Boogie-Woogie, Rhythm & Blues and Rock & Roll. The popularity of this music has never really gone away and we know that Brian, Ivan, Wayne and Ian will have you up and jumping.

Australia’s biggest pop star of the sixties, Normie Rowe AM defied the logic of the times - make no mistake, he was huge! While still a teenager, he created pop riots and became the first Melbourne recording artist to achieve a national Australian No.1.
Our first King of Pop is an ARIA Hall of Famer who had hits like Shakin’ All Over, Ohh La La, Que Sera Sera and It Ain’t Necessarily So and starred in TV and stage shows including Sons & Daughters, Annie, Chess, Evita and as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables. He's done it all, so don't miss this true showbiz legend when he returns to TomKatz!
The Herberts are a band playing the best of sixties music, they could have been transported from playing a couple of streets away from the Beatles at the Cavern club or Carnaby street. Featuring one of the best frontmen in Australia, The Herberts is a 60s concept band playing all the popular dance songs from 60s Britain. They wear the uniform of the era and not only sound great but look great as well. Their appeal is widespread as they have chosen songs that were not only hits in the 60s but have been re-covered by bands in the 80s, 90s and 2000s. These guys are great to listen to, awesome to dance to and funny and entertaining for those who just like to sit back and watch.

Marty Rose blasted onto the scene with a Mushroom Records recording contract in 1977, based solely on raw talent and his first single Memories of You. In 1982 Marty formed the first electronic duo with the very talented Adrian Scott of Air Supply, going into record the single Words Can Never Say. During the 80s he continued to drive his career to the top while touring Australian and New Zealand as the front man for the great Jeff “Skunk” Baxter of Steely Dan and Doobie Brothers fame. Over the years since, Marty has consistently delivered what audiences want to hear – good songs played by one of Australia’s top musicians. Today, with David Briggs (little river band), Pip Joyce (glenn shorrock band), Jo Imbroll (ian moss band) and Gil Mathews (aztecs) backing up Marty's epic piano, they play originals and covers of your favourite music, from the 60s right through to their latest album.
TomKatz welcomes the return of Mick Hamilton from the original 'VIBRANTS', the sensational house band from the crazy 60s in Sorrento, famous for their hit Something About You. Mick brings his new band playing 50s and 60s rock at its best, so join The New Dynamix - you’ll be dancing in the aisles on a musical journey to be remembered. With a stellar line up of superb support musicians including Gavin Carroll [ex Lobby Loyde/Wild Cherries], Mal Ronay [ex The Premiers/Vincents] and Jason Temple [ex Honey Bee and the Stingers]. Don't miss this one!
With nowhere to play and no one to play to during lockdown, Paul Buchanan gathered members of Amnesia Blues Band (Ning Hopkins, guitar; Darryl Kerr, bass and Stuart Anderson, drums) and The Blues Lizards (Marc Leyshan, guitar) in a shed outside of Maffra to create Paul Buchanan’s Voodoo Preachers. Over several months of rehearsals and recording at Stuart’s Sellings Studio, the Voodoo Preachers refined their swampy yet slick sound and recorded their debut album Testimony. And they're bringing that signature sound back to TomKatz - you're gonna love it!
Steve Hoy first appeared on the scene in 1985 with the release of Anticipation (produced by Joe Camilleri). The album contained rootsy versions of nine Hoy originals backed by Ross Hannaford, Wayne Duncan and Gary Young; Daddy Cool in all but name. Since then, Steve has released a string of critically acclaimed and highly respected albums; Possession, Life Next Door and Self Defence and has played live extensively, both headlining and supporting numerous artists like The Black Sorrows, Tori Amos and Warren Zevon. Steve has worked with everyone and played everywhere - and we can't wait for him to bring his music back to TomKatz, don't miss it!

The Substitutes have recently been described as "One of the last great genuine Australian ‘60s rock bands ... They well and truly deserve their icon status in Aussie folklore". And they have a vast repertoire of fine ‘60s music including a lot of great (and complex) material from the two most important bands of the '60s and you get to decide who’s your favourite. They finish off the night with some really powerful music from the 'Best of the Rest' so this will be an exciting and intense show. Their last six shows have sold out, so get your tickets and be there!

Jimi is award-winning bluesman (seriously, he's won heaps!) and one of Australia's most talented guitarists, known for his years of solo work in blues and rock, plus his time with The Screaming Jets. In his element live on stage, his combination of banter and story-telling, incredible guitar and mandolin chops mix with superb songwriting and performance to make Jimi one of the 'must-see' acts in blues today. He's been called the electric love child of T-Bone Walker, BB King and Jimi Hendrix for good reason - he even makes an acoustic guitar wail!
The Hornets have been a mainstay of Melbourne and Australia’s blues and roots scene for two and a half decades. For a very special day at TomKatz the line-up of the band includes three of its constant and original members: author, singer/songwriter and guitarist Craig Horne, ARIA Hall of Famer guitarist Jeff Burstin (Jo Jo Zep, Black Sorrows) and Jeff's ARIA award-winning band mate from Jo Jo Zep and The Black Sorrows, guitarist, singer/songwriter Wayne Burt.

Kinematic have been treading the boards since starting as an acoustic duo in 2000. Since then, they've done a lot for an independent band - seven albums, a live concert movie, songs on radio, TV, documentaries and podcasts, plus plenty of live shows and festivals. The pandemic didn't stop them releasing a new album but it did stop them playing live - if all goes well, this will be their first show in 2 years and 5 days!

John brings his 40-year catalogue of songwriting to Tom Katz - from the underground hit of 'Don't Go to Sydney' to his latest rock/pop outings, it's a masterclass in songwriting!
Steve has worked with everyone and played everywhere - and we can't wait for him to bring his music to TomKatz, don't miss it!
This fabulous trio are well know to Sorra' locals having been regular musical guests over the years, and their classy and popular show is always a blast.
Here's a taste of what the show sounds like (YouTube link)With nowhere to play and no one to play to during lockdow, Paul Buchanan gathered members of Amnesia Blues Band (Ning Hopkins, guitar; Darryl Kerr, bass and Stuart Anderson, drums) and The Blues Lizards (Marc Leyshan, guitar) in a shed outside of Maffra to create Paul Buchanan’s Voodoo Preachers. Over several months of rehearsals and recording at Stuart’s Sellings Studio, the Voodoo Preachers refined their swampy yet slick sound and recorded their debut album Testimony. And now they're bringing that signature sound to TomKatz - you're gonna love it!
Meet the band that creates a unique blend of Cajun, Zydeco and Blues-inspired music. Geoff Le Blanc (the le blanc brothers) brings true Cajun royalty with his Cajun Accordions and those original bayou tunes that flow from him like his Cajun blood. Paul Jonas (fire & theft), one of Melbourne finest violin players, melds his unique style to bring a truly original sound that you can kick yer heels up to.
Nick Thorpe (prayerbabies) drives the music with his beautiful double bass and voice. Billy Abbott (crawfish dave) on lead vocals, soulful clarinet and snappy washboard brings a wealth of Zydeco/Cajun experience. Paul Dalby (prayerbabies) on guitar and vocals, and Michaela Burke from Melbourne's famous Celtic City Sons is on drums, bringing some great female energy to the band. So, now that we have been introduced to our loveable crazy boys and girls from bayou country, get ready to dance the day away until you can’t take any more. Then get up and do it all again!
Australia's piano playing wild man with an original style that's steeped in rumbling blues and untamed rockabilly. With a voice that’ll stir the soul, he combines early rock 'n' roll with rhythm & blues.
The Oz answer to Jerry Lee Lewis he may well be - he's even supported Jerry in Vegas! Ezra's brand of rockin’ blues, boogie woogie and honky tonk will knock your sox off!
With killer songs and cool grooves, 'The Roots' have toured, won a handful of awards and released three albums so far. See this alt-country, folk-rocking blues and, yes, sometimes even hard rocking, outfit create their brand of non-stop infectious fun and dance. Watch the amazing juggling skills of the human juke box when the Daddios kick in too – all this in one afternoon! One, nay, two of our favourite local bands.
KBT is not your typical blues band. Their sound has a hard rocky edge with a strong blues flavour – and their performances are reminiscent of the glory days of raw, honest Aussie pub rock. The band puts its own take on some obscure covers, along with a few classics and award winning originals.
Louis King (Tommy McEwan) has been at the top of the roots music scene in Australia since his first CD was released in 1996. His music is a dangerous mix of blues and rockabilly songwriting, polished by years of touring Australia and overseas, with a stage act that is a mixture of an outback roadhouse and a Glasgow pub dance. His Klub plays stacks of tracks in blues, rock’n’roll and rockabilly to get you flipping, jumping and jiving! What's not to enjoy?
After the day's commemorations, enjoy a community afternoon at the Sorrento Portsea RSL and TomKatz. Starting at 1:00, it's our free community BBQ, then the Surrey Hills Mob and Cruizin' see us right thought til 7:00 with great live music. The whole afternoon is free, but book a ticket to ensure a place!
Australia’s country rock legends Stars are back after more than 30 years with two sensational new albums, playing festivals and sold-out concerts across the land.
After forming in the mid 70s, Stars quickly came to the attention of Michael Gudinski and Mushroom Records by way of recommendations from Beeb Birtles and The Little River Band. Their albums Land of Fortune, Paradise and 1157 went gold and the band had substantial hit singles with Look after Yourself and Mighty Rock.
Following the sad passing of their songwriter Andy Durant, a stellar support cast including Jimmy Barnes, Renee Geyer, Ian Moss and Richard Clapton participated in the national number one album The Andy Durant Memorial Concert. The album is forever etched in Australia’s musical consciousness.
Now with the original line-up of Mick Pealing on vocals, Mal Eastick on guitar, Roger McLachlan on bass, Erik Chess on drums and new member Nick Charles on guitar the band has been receiving rave reviews and new fans wherever they play. A Stars concert features the classic tracks from the past glorious albums and the new music retaining Stars definitive style.
Maestro of progressive rock Mike Rudd is back with the band that can recreate the original Spectrum, The Indelible Murtceps and Ariel just for you.
The Indelibles will also treat you to songs like I'll Be Gone, Launching Place Part Two, Jamaican Farewell, Rock & Roll Scars, Esmeralda, Some Good Advice and We Are Indelible, plus some of their more recent work, and you'll be in Spectrum heaven. Irresistible? Indelible? Most defnitely!
Backed by years of aggressive touring locally and abroad, this Melbourne band has a hard-earned reputation for high fuelled live performances.
To quote Doghouse Dave, “We just get out there and go flat out from start to finish. We'll just go for it the whole time. We'll pick all the stuff we know works and play all that.”
A hit with the crowd on their last two visits, the boys are fast becoming regular TK faves!
This thundering 5 piece know how to takes you back in time a few decades! Playing the vintage rock 'n' blues of bands like Chris Rea, Bad Company, The Who, Tom Petty, Rolling Stones and ZZ Top, the fellas (Starry, David, John, Al and John M) will transport you back to a time when rock was young. Well, not a kid, but still only in its twenties!
MADLLIPS is a group of three extraordinary musicians who have been performing together for many years. What they do comes from the heart and their hands ... and they love to play. It is all about LIVE music, played by REAL musicians, playing hits that span many decades ... hits you can dance to! These crowd-pleasers are no stranger to Sorrento, and it's great to see them back once more!
Local legends the Daddios, President Roots and Jalgany are getting together to support the Roman Beach Party team (named in honour of the Celibate Rifle's Damian Lovelock), in their bid to drive from the outback to the coast in one of the crappiest cars imaginable.
Our co-drivers are Don Clancy and Pete "Smokey" Dawson (who'll be fronting up on bass, guitar and vocal duties for the night), and their aim is to raise as much coin as possible, with every dollar from ticket sales goes to funding cancer research and treatment. Make yourself feel good all over with some great tunes for a great cause.
The members of The Substitutes were all inspired by the music of the Sixties to start their own music careers. Though their careers went in different directions, they all became professional musicians, toured nationally (and internationally) and recorded albums and singles. All the while they have retained a love for performing live and for the music that originally excited them.
Their manifesto is “To boldly go where no (cover) band has gone before” and they only play rock and pop music recorded between January 1964 and December 1970 (i.e. the years commonly referred to as The Sixties). They play the songs that 'bar bands' avoid - the really complex songs, the lost gems, the ones in difficult keys, the ones with odd arrangements and instrumentation - and to quote the band “we make it bloody hard for ourselves really.”
Catnip the band are quality musicians with a wealth of experience, having played in many top Melbourne cover bands over the years. Lineup is Aldo Lennard (the lennard brothers, tv/recording artists) on lead vocals, Mike O’Dowd on drums, Barry "Stick" Hooper on bass/vocals, Ron G on vocals/keyboards and ROB "Kiwiw" Webb on guitar/vocals. The band’s "big" sound relives classic hits from artists such as Billy Joel, the Eagles, John Cougar Mellencamp, Bryan Adams, Robert Palmer, Bruce Springsteen, Dragon, Paul Kelly, Bryan Ferry, Cold Chisel, Santana, Mental as Anything, and more, with gusto and a whole lot of fun on the way. Catnip will "ROCK" TomKatz ... are you ready to party?
A traditional blues band, bringing you original blues with stories of hard drinkin' women, lost loves and broken dreams. No funk, no soul, no rock and roll - just blues and boogie all the way!
2016 saw the release of their debut album We Still Remember and the latest album Hailstone was released in June 2019. The band were finalists in the Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society International Blues Challenge every year from 2016-2019, and were voted MBAS Vic/Tas Band Of The Year in 2016 and 2019. Arguably the most successful blues band to come out of Gippsland for decades, don't miss them when they hit the pointy end of the peninsula.
Champs saw us safely out of lock down at the end of last year with two sold out shows and now he's back. With a band. Uh oh.
These four ‘lads’ play 60s & 70s rock, with moments of 40s, R&B, swing, ‘cabaret-country’ and some of their own songs thrown in too.
All a part of Melbourne Rock Music history, the members of The Useful Members of Society have played in The Models, Sports, Paul Kelly & The Dots, The Leisuremasters, the Rock Wiz house band, El Prezzos, Avalanche, The Fabulaires, The Young Homebuyers, The Maniac Rockers From Hell and The Eternal Struggle Between The Forces of Good & Evil. And Greg Champion has been a member of ABC’s The Coodabeen Champions since the early 80s. Helluva pedigree!

Good news, the uber talented singer-songwriter and guitarist of legend Rob Papp is sticking around for, not one, but two Australia Day encores! First up with a solo spot at 1:00 then at 3:00 he joins the sensational Kevin Buckingham Trio. KBB is not your typical blues band. Their sound has a hard rocky edge with a strong blues flavour – and their performances are reminiscent of the glory days of raw, honest Aussie pub rock. The band puts its own take on some obscure covers, along with a few classics and award winning originals.
This is one of the biggest days on the calendar year, with amazing live music and a community BBQ all afternoon, so don't miss it!
Rob Papp is a singer-songwriter and legendary guitarist with many years of experience performing in bands, duos and solo gigs, and as a studio recording artist. His versatility and musical prowess set a high bar and it’s easy to see why he's so well loved and respected by fellow musicians and fans alike.
Rob started playing at just 15 with his father’s jazz band before moving onto rock and roll and has continued to play just about everything else since. There’s no doubt Rob loses himself while playing. Even with his eyes closed you get the feeling he knows exactly what’s going on! An afternoon of extraordinary music awaits!
Mick Pealing cut his teeth on Adelaide's Hindley Street, forming the band Stars and recording the hit singles Mighty Rock and Look After Yourself. Over the following decades Mick continued to front his own bands, The Ideals, The Method and The Spaniards and, today, continues his love for British hard rock from the 60s and 70s with the band Raw Brit, and performs regularly with fellow Stars band member Nick Charles.
Nick needs little introduction - those who have seen him perform live over the past 30 years or so, listened to his recordings or read his excellent Rhythms column will be well aware of his considerable prowess as an acoustic guitar finger-picker and his expertise over a wide range of roots music.
Mick and Nick perform acoustically the songs they wrote together for the Stars album Boundary Rider and collected favourites from their musical pasts. Also featuring a taste of new music they have written for the as-yet-untitled new Stars album.
This local girl with grit and soul will rock the house out with her fabulous 5-piece band, whoah!
With original songs from her freshly recorded and soon-to-be-released EP Red Dust Salt Water, covers of her uncle Archie Roach and aunty Ruby Hunter's songs and a few other crowd pleasers thrown in, Nola and band deliver an afternoon of tunes to inspire, sing along and dance to.

Many Australians know Phil as a member of Chain, the legendary blues band whose contribution to Australian music and the development of the blues in this country is unparalleled. In fact, he's just been inducted by Blues Music Victoria as the 2020 People's choice Victorian Blues Legend! Since the mid 70s, Phil has forged a brilliant solo career for himself. He has featured at all the major festivals and venues throughout the country, and the list of international artists he has toured with, performed alongside or recorded with is impressive. His skillful touch and great passion for the blues have kept him musically progressive, always prepared to interest himself in new musical ideas whilst maintaining his stylistic purpose. The result is a gifted songwriter with an awesome guitar technique.
